What Is a Special Taxing District?
A special taxing district is a local governmental entity established to provide specific services within a defined neighborhood or area. In Connecticut, districts such as ours are created under state law to manage and maintain amenities like beaches and boat launches, offer boat slips, and support other community needs that extend beyond the services provided by the town.
If your property is located within the district, you help fund these services through a district tax.
What Do We Do?
We use the taxes collected from properties in the district to pay for services that directly benefit this area.
All funds collected stay within the district and are used only for these local purposes.
When Are Tax Bills Sent?
Tax bills for the district are typically sent out once a year, often around the same time as your town’s property tax bill (7/1)
In some cases:
- You will receive a separate bill directly from the PPC
When Are Payments Due?
Payment due dates usually follow the same schedule as your town property taxes. This often means:
- A single annual payment,
Your bill will clearly show the amount due and the due date.
Important to Know
- Even if you don’t receive a bill, the tax is still due.
- Late payments may be subject to interest or penalties, just like town taxes.
- All taxes collected are used only for services within the district.
Questions?
If you have questions about your bill, payment options, or what the district covers, please contact us. We’re here to help you understand how your tax dollars are used in your neighborhood.
